What Are IBC Totes?

Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs), also known as IBC totes, IBC tanks, or tote tanks, are reusable industrial containers designed for the transport and storage of liquids, semi-solids, pastes, and solids. They represent the perfect middle ground between drums and tank trucks.

A standard IBC consists of a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) inner bottle encased in a tubular steel cage, all mounted on an integrated pallet base. This design combines the chemical resistance of plastic with the structural strength and stackability of metal, creating a versatile, efficient container for bulk materials.

IBCs have become the preferred choice for bulk liquid handling across industries because they're reusable, stackable, easily transported with standard forklifts, and can be completely drained via a bottom valve. They hold significantly more than drums while remaining easy to handle and store.

IBC Conditions Explained

Choose the right condition level for your application and budget

New

New / Virgin

Brand new IBC totes that have never been used. Factory sealed with all documentation. Required for food, pharmaceutical, and high-purity applications where traceability and contamination prevention are critical.

Best for: Food, pharma, cosmeticsCertification: Full UN/DOTPrice range: $250 - $400
Rebottled

Rebottled / Recaged

A brand new HDPE bottle installed in a cleaned and inspected used cage. Offers food-grade cleanliness at a lower cost than new. The bottle is virgin and uncontaminated, while the cage provides proven structural integrity.

Best for: Food-grade at lower costCertification: UN/DOT compliantPrice range: $175 - $275
Reconditioned

Reconditioned

Previously used IBCs that have been professionally cleaned, inspected, and pressure tested. May have some cosmetic wear but are fully functional. Suitable for most industrial applications where food-grade isn't required.

Best for: Industrial, chemicalsCertification: Inspected, testedPrice range: $100 - $175
As-Is

As-Is / Used

Previously used IBCs sold in current condition without cleaning or reconditioning. Significant cosmetic wear, may have residue. Best for non-critical storage applications where appearance doesn't matter.

Best for: Rainwater, non-critical storageCertification: None - sold as-isPrice range: $50 - $100

Technical Specifications

Understanding IBC specifications helps you choose the right container for your application. Here are the key specs to consider.

Bottle Material

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) - The standard for most applications. Food-safe, chemical resistant, UV stabilized. Compatible with water, most acids, bases, and alcohols.

Cage Construction

Tubular steel, galvanized - Provides structural support and stackability. Protects the bottle from impact damage. Allows forklift entry from all four sides.

Pallet Base

Steel, wood, or composite - Steel is most durable. Wood is economical. Composite offers a balance. All allow standard 48x40 pallet handling.

Fill Opening

6" (150mm) or 8" (225mm) - Top fill opening with screw cap. Larger opening for viscous products or inspection access. Vented caps available.

Discharge Valve

2" (50mm) butterfly or ball valve - Bottom discharge for gravity feed. Butterfly is standard. Ball valve for better flow control. Camlock adapters available.

UN/DOT Rating

31HA1/Y or 31HA1/X - Certification for hazardous material transport. Y rating for 1.2 specific gravity. X rating for 1.9 specific gravity (heavier liquids).

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about IBC totes

Can I use a reconditioned IBC for food products?

No. For food-contact applications, you need either new or rebottled IBCs with a virgin HDPE bottle. Reconditioned IBCs are suitable for industrial, non-food applications only.

How many times can an IBC be reused?

With proper care, composite IBCs can be reused 10-20 times over 5-10 years. The bottle typically needs replacement before the cage. Stainless steel IBCs can last 25+ years.

Are your IBCs UN/DOT certified?

Yes, new and rebottled IBCs come with full UN/DOT certification for hazmat transport. Reconditioned IBCs may or may not retain certification depending on condition.

What chemicals are compatible with HDPE bottles?

HDPE is compatible with most acids, bases, alcohols, and aqueous solutions. Not recommended for strong oxidizers, some solvents (ketones, aromatics), or concentrated nitric acid. Ask us for a compatibility chart.

Can IBCs be stacked when full?

Yes, standard composite IBCs can be stacked 2-high when full (with proper weight distribution) and 4-high when empty. Always check the specific IBC's stacking rating.

Do you offer IBC heating solutions?

Yes, we carry IBC heating blankets and immersion heaters for temperature-sensitive products. These help maintain viscosity and prevent freezing in cold storage or transport.
