The Foundation of Modern Logistics
Pallets are the unsung heroes of the supply chain. These flat transport structures support goods in a stable fashion while being lifted by forklifts, pallet jacks, front loaders, or other jacking devices. Without pallets, modern warehousing and shipping as we know it would not exist.
The standard pallet revolutionized global commerce by creating a universal unit of handling. Today, there are approximately 2 billion pallets in circulation in the United States alone, moving an estimated 80% of all U.S. trade. Whether wood, plastic, or composite, pallets enable efficient stacking, storage, and transportation of goods across every industry.
At Colorado Packaging, we offer a complete range of pallet solutions - from economical used wood pallets to premium new plastic pallets, and everything in between. We also provide pallet repair services to extend the life of your existing inventory and recycling services for pallets that have reached end of life.
Pallet Materials
Choose the right material for your application, budget, and sustainability goals
Wood Pallets

The traditional choice accounting for 90%+ of all pallets. Economical, easily repaired, and fully recyclable. Can be heat-treated for international shipping (ISPM-15). Best choice for most general applications.
Best For:
- General warehousing
- One-way shipping
- Budget-conscious operations
- Export (when heat-treated)
Plastic Pallets

Durable, hygienic, and consistent. No splintering, no nails, no fumigation required. Easy to clean and sanitize. Higher upfront cost but lowest total cost of ownership for closed-loop systems.
Best For:
- Food & beverage
- Pharmaceuticals
- Clean rooms
- Automated systems
Composite Pallets

Made from wood fibers, recycled plastic, or other materials. No heat treatment required for export. Lighter than solid wood, more durable than standard wood. Growing in popularity for international shipping.
Best For:
- International shipping
- Air freight
- Display applications
- Lightweight needs
Pallet Construction Types
Different designs for different applications and handling requirements
Stringer Pallets
Most common type. Uses 2-4 parallel stringers (boards) to support the deck. Notched stringers allow 4-way entry. Economical and widely available.
Block Pallets
Uses cylindrical or square blocks between deck boards. True 4-way entry from all sides. Stronger and more durable than stringer pallets. Preferred for heavy loads.
Double-Face Pallets
Deck boards on both top and bottom. Can be reversible (identical faces) or non-reversible. Provides better stability and load distribution.
Single-Face Pallets
Deck boards on one side only. Lighter and more economical. Best for one-way shipping or as slip sheets. Not suitable for racking.
Nestable Pallets
Designed to stack inside each other when empty. Saves significant space in storage and return shipping. Popular for closed-loop logistics.
Rackable Pallets
Engineered for use in pallet racking systems. Reinforced bottom deck and stringers support loads when spanning rack beams. Essential for warehouse storage.

Pallet Grading System
We grade all used pallets to help you choose the right quality level
Grade A - Premium
Like-new condition with minimal wear. No repairs, no broken boards, no protruding nails. Clean appearance suitable for retail display, export, or customer-facing applications. May have light scuffing from single use.
Grade B - Standard
Good working condition with visible wear. May have minor repairs (1-2 replaced boards), some staining, or surface damage. Structurally sound and fully functional. Our most popular grade - best value for general warehouse use.
Grade C - Economy
Heavy wear but still functional. Multiple repairs, significant staining, or cosmetic damage. May have up to 3 replaced boards. Best for internal use, one-way shipping, or applications where appearance doesn't matter.
Heat Treatment for Export
International Shipping? Your wood pallets need to be heat-treated and stamped in compliance with ISPM-15 regulations to prevent the spread of invasive species.
ISPM-15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) is an international agreement that requires all wood packaging materials to be debarked and treated using approved methods before being used in international trade.
Heat Treatment (HT)
Wood core heated to 56°C for 30 minutes minimum
IPPC Stamp
Official stamp certifying treatment compliance
Global Acceptance
Accepted by all countries requiring ISPM-15

Learn MoreFrequently Asked Questions
Common questions about pallets
What size pallet should I use?
The 48x40" GMA pallet is the most common size and fits most racking systems, trucks, and containers. For specialized applications like automotive (48x45) or drums (48x48), choose the industry-standard size.
Wood or plastic pallets - which is better?
It depends on your application. Wood is more economical and easily repaired, making it ideal for one-way shipping. Plastic is more durable and hygienic, better for closed-loop systems, food, or pharmaceutical use.
Do I need heat-treated pallets?
Yes, if you're shipping internationally. ISPM-15 requires all wood packaging to be heat-treated and stamped for international shipments. We can supply HT-stamped pallets or treat your existing pallets.
What's the weight capacity of a pallet?
Standard stringer pallets typically support 2,500 lbs dynamic (in motion) and 5,000 lbs static (at rest). Block pallets and heavy-duty designs can support significantly more. Always check specs for your specific pallet.
How many pallets can I fit in a truck?
A standard 53' trailer can fit 26-30 floor-loaded 48x40 pallets (single layer). With stacking, you can transport significantly more. We can help you optimize your loads for maximum efficiency.
Do you offer pallet management programs?
Yes! We offer full pallet management including supply, retrieval, repair, and recycling. This is ideal for companies that want to outsource pallet logistics and focus on their core business.
